Cancer is relentess. But so are we.

One year on 7/2 ❤️

Today is a year to the day that my Mum passed away, and yes it hurts.

I am determined to do something good with today, so it’s day two of an informal bake sale at work. Simply cake for all and donate if you can! I spent a solid 32 hours baking 144 cupcakes and fitting in an 8km training run and some sleep in that time too. I’ve had my partner here for support and of course some quality control on the baking. 🤣

I want to say a huge thank you to everyone that has donated and encouraged me! I am a little overwhelmed with the support I have had, starting out I never dreamed I would be able to raise this much and we are still going. So thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you! Feeling warm, glowy and a little sad today, just thank you!

What have you got me into?

Wind back to the start of this year and the very thought of doing this would be laughable to myself and everyone that knows me. It is, or was widely known…I do not run. How things can change in a few short months!

I lost my Mum to brain cancer in February of this year. As time goes on I only miss her more, because there are so many good things that have happened to me this year that I wish I could tell her about. She never got to meet my partner who has been my rock, my biggest supporter, and is just an all round WONDERFUL person. He is also largely responsible for me getting into running in the first place.

So how did I get here? Well after a good long while of thinking my partner was nuts for doing so much running it started with me going along to support at park runs and meeting some of his friends. Between being inspired by how supportive the running community is and some gentle bugging from many of them I finally decided I would just try it. I got my running shoes on and went with my partner to the local park. I dramatically reclined on a bench in less than one mile! But I tried again, and again and started going to park runs as well. I have done a few 5k races now and after a frustrating recovery from a little stumble ouch injury I am delighted to be a part of the sub 30 club. So naturally the next step is to take on a 10k right? I was persuaded by promises of penguins and polar bears and a pretty medal to sign up, and for a good cause too!

Training begins! I appreciate any and all support!

‘Tis the season

Seasons greetings! Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far whether that’s by donating or giving me encouragement in my training.

As you can see training is well underway, my runs are getting longer and more frequent and I am nicely on track to hit my goal of completing the winter 10k in 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes. I’m also delighted to have increased my fundraising goal again!

I share with you today a happy memory from 10 years ago. In 2014 I moved into my flat and come December my Mum took great delight in having a perfectly good excuse to buy more Christmas decorations! She loved Christmas and even after moving out I inevitably ended up dressing up tree every year and imploring her to perhaps not buy enough food to feed the WHOLE street that year. 🤣

It was wonderful exploring the garden centres and shops, picking out a very small but very real tree for my first Christmas in my own home, and many many shiny things to adorn it! One of my favourite decorations she bought me was a Lemax Christmas Carousel, it is with great pride it’s displayed on my table at home this year alongside a tiny piece of her. It has brought me peace and happiness remembering her at this time of year, and I am looking forward to spending time with family old and new this Christmas.

I know the bills are stacking up and for a lot of you there are many expenses this time of year, but if you can put even a couple of quid my way I would be very grateful. Thank you all!
