05/01/2025: New year, new plan 💪

I’m really proud that in the last 3 months of 2024 I built running into my everyday routine and became a runner! Couch to 5k was integral to that and I am so happy I completed it.

I kept up the good habit of running regularly in December and then on Monday 30th December I started an 8 week plan with Nike Run Club that will help me build towards 10km.

The training plan is entirely different to couch to 5k. Instead of trying to keep running for longer and longer periods, my new plan now includes speed runs, recovery runs and long runs. I need to run a minimum of 3x per week (preferably 5).

I was nervous about the speed run but it was actually so fun. You only run for 1 minute but fast - and I didn’t have to hold back. On longer runs I try to save myself so hold back a bit but with the speed runs you can be a bit more free.

The challenge however has been keeping pace on the longer runs and the recovery runs. Today I ran so fast and set all kinds of records on my 4K long run and nearly died in the process. It’s a new challenge but one I’m looking forward to. 7 weeks to go!

06/12/24: Couch to 5k completed! 🥳

So I’ve hit my biggest milestone on my journey to 10k so far - completing the couch to 5k app.

I think I started running for just 1 minute at a time and today I ran for 30 minutes for the third time in a week.

It hasn’t been perfect. Some weeks went by where I didn’t run, some weeks I only completed two runs instead of three, and I had to repeat some runs two or three times.

This is the third time I’ve done couch to 5k but the first time I’ve completed it. In the past i’ve tried to be perfect and complete every run every other day and stick religiously to the schedule. This is great until you hit a bump in the road. And previously, the moment I’ve missed a run or not been able to finish, i’ve given up completely and stopped running.

This time, my aim has been to do what I can in my own time. To listen to my body if it’s too tough but be kind and allow myself time to break if I need it.

It’s been difficult moving from that all or nothing mindset but I hope that the lessons I’ve learnt this time will help me build running into my lifestyle sustainably and allow me to enjoy it more!

I would 100% recommend the couch to 5k app to anyone that wants to give it a try. I couldn’t have got this far without it!

04/11/24: Tackling the first hurdle 💪

Couch 2 5k was going really well. I was sailing through the runs and didn’t miss a single night. I felt good running and you know what, I would even go as far as to say I was enjoying it!

And about 3 weeks ago, I ran for 20 minutes non stop. I was unstoppable.

You know there’s a ‘but’ coming, right?

I was a bit cocky with the running thing and then my first run after the 20 minute run was the hardest thing ever. It was only 5 mins, followed by 8 mins, then 5 mins with only a short 3 minute walk between each stretch. It was hard. I did it, but it was tough.

That next run broke me. It sounded simple, just two 10 minute runs, but I was dead after the first run and couldn’t complete the second ten minute leg. I’d already run for 20 minutes - this should be easy!

So I stopped. I gave myself a break and then it was my birthday. After my birthday it was time to get back, so I tried the two 10 minute runs again. And once again, I died. I couldn’t complete it, it was so hard!

So then I went back, tried an easier run again and it went ok. Today, I attempted the two 10 minutes again and while it was tough, I finally completed it. Third time’s a charm! 🍀

My next run is a 25 minute run. I am really nervous about this one because it feels like another big step up. I’m just trying to keep in mind the big goal and remembering that if I don’t manage the full 25 minutes, that I can keep trying, like I did this week.

Thanks so much for your support, it is really keeping me going. 🙏

21/09/24: Run 1 done! ✅

The last time I did any proper running was during the pandemic, when I did couch to 5k to give me something to do and keep me occupied.

And because it’s been so long, I have no idea where I’m at in terms of running. So today was about getting out and getting an idea of where to start from.

I did Couch to 5k week 2 run 1 - which is 90 seconds running, 2 mins walking, 6 times in a row. And you know what, I found it pretty easy actually!! 🥳

So from Monday I’ll try week 3.

Really glad to have got started already and really looking forward to the challenge.

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me already and had faith that I’ll actually do it 😂

19/09/24: Here we go!

I am taking on the Cancer Research UK London Winter Run 2025.

God knows why I agreed to this! There’s much more fun and enjoyable ways to raise money.

And did I mention I hate running? I’d much rather be dump tackled into a muddy puddle than spend any length of time pounding the pavement.

But sometimes in life you have to do things you don’t like for things to get better 🌈

Having worked at a hospice for several years, I saw first hand the number of people who were affected by cancer. It seemed indiscriminate - I met so many people from so many walks of life facing the same battle. And of course, it’s close to home to, friends, family and team mates have all been affected.

Cancer Research doesn’t just look for those all important cures, but better ways to treat people and detect cancer earlier so families can be together for longer.

For me, 10km is a really big challenge, and I am scared! But for those of us facing cancer, the battle is even bigger. So please dig as deep as you can and give generously so the big C isn’t quite so big and scary for future generations.🎗️💕
