In our quest to try to find something robust enough to hold the shape of a stingray's wings, while also being able to bend (given my arms will need to swing while running!), we ordered some samples of this leatherette. Which colour do you think is the most 'stingray'?

We start with ideas

Sal and I start ideating, over some lunch of course. We came up with all sorts of options for materials - from foam mats to duvet covers. And for the design, will I be in the stingray, or is it like a cape draped across my back? One thing's for sure - I'll need one VERY long arm for the top right design.

The adventure begins with an amazing friend

Mum and I had a 'thing' with stingrays. Ever since we met Thomas, the baby eagle ray, at the Melbourne Aquarium. We just fell in love with him - his flappy wings and cheeky antics. He was SO CUTE.

From then on I'd give Mum stingrays over the years - little plushies, videos and memes, and even a leather keyring that she kept for so long it lost an eye. It would stare up at her with the well-worn love of a broken, goggly cyclops. She just couldn't face throwing it away.

When I was thinking of embarking on this escapade in her memory, I wanted to bring a bit of her and a bit of joy to my run. And so came my ambition to run AS a stingray.

But. My crafting skills are mediocre at best. What is a girl to do?

Enter the exceptionally talented and golden-hearted Sal Dixon. Costume creator extraordinaire, she has kindly agreed to be my partner in realising my stingray fancy-dress dream.

I will share our journey here as we conceptualise and build a stingray costume for an epic 10k run. Stay tuned for ridiculousness and fun.
